News

Sunday April 5th 2009

A couple of weeks since the last transmission so apologies about that ... some quick updates whilst I keep an eye on the United Villa game. Co Ed first this week and missing players has been the story over the last few games. A tough one against Isoptopes resulted in an 8 - 3 loss but these are a young skilful team and with a few players missing it was always going to be an uphill battle. After a week break, we played Brampton and again with most of the squad unavailable, we eventually ran out 4 - 0 winners to keep us up there. Supposed to play the Gunners yesterday but some shoddy communication from the front office at SC and we showed and they didn't. A default 1 - 0 win to us. Next week we are up against the old foe Benfica. Will need the full team out and with Victor and Jenna AWOL for the last few weeks, Mike struggling with various health related problems (piles is the latest affliction preventing him playing we hear) and the Parkes clan juggling various social engagements, the 'Macmillan & Wife' (if you're too young to remember this classic 70's show, ask Grimes (45 today)) management team of Warren and Mary Jane will need all their collective persuasive skills to get everyone out. Dont be late or the fella on the left will be out for justice.

So over 30's ... well where to begin. A few weeks ago we played at 11.30 and had the whole of Brampton come out and play. A 3 - 2 win against Toronto Forest keeps us in it. A week off and up against our old mates of Riverplate. Lots of their regulars missing and an easy victory (surprising) for us at 4 - 1. In line with the odd goings on at our beloved Soccer City facility, a Saturday game against Oakville Athletic and even with a full squad we just knicked this one with a 4 - 3 win. So onto this week and what turned out to be quite a debacle against Cleveland Steamers O30's. With a very poor collective performance we were never in this game and eventually ran out 3 - 1 losers.

Other news and a good time had by those that were able to attend the Paul Capone Jack & Jill last night. A few drinks and some money raised for the happy couple.

A new feature each week or update will be a link to some of the classic archive material and the rather strange ramblings of Paul G .. whose match reports are the stuff of legend but seem to be getting further away from an actual match report. Anyhow, here is the 1st link to our 1st blast from the past, and it a classic Roy's Throbbing Vein piece.

and Mr G's latest ramble ...

Team fee $2695. If we want to enter the league cup played on Saturday's it's an extra $50. We were counting last night and we have maybe, just maybe, 16 full time players who are confirmed to play. That is $170 each. We need to find at least 5 more chaps to add to the squad to keep the costs down. Anyone know of any players looking for a game? What is Ray up to nowadays?

Over 30's.
I have the SGM tomorrow where we find out our division opponents, league set up etc...League fees are a $575. Field fees to be confirmed, but imagine an even $1000. Refs are $60 a home game, figure 9 home games. Total approx, barring added expenses $2115. We should be able to get about 22 players this summer if all the supposed new signings come on board, so we are looking at $100 each player for a squad of 22.

I will hit up the Clock again to see if they are interested in sponsorship. Times are tough of course, but I will see what I can get. A new kit is needed, but right now we would need to raise an extra $800 at least for that (shirts, shorts, socks).

With the advent of more and more technology at our fingertips (The Japanese have invented a thing that straps around your wrist and can actually tell you what time it is!) it is a wonder that any of us can think for ourselves anymore. Picture this scene of domestic bliss:

(A comfy living room. Mozart playing in the background. Well, not actually him, but a recording. Original Dali and Monet prints adorn the tastefully decorated walls. A deer hound sleeps at his masters feet. A roaring fire, the smell of a pheasant cooking. Servants going about their business quietly and respectively)

Enter stage right.

Wendy: (fresh from organizing the collected works of Byron in the plush library) "Darling, here is your sherry."

Ian: (Velvet smoking jacket, pipe, slippers and copy of Sunday Times from 1974 tucked under his arm. Sitting in wing-backed leather chair. Gift from Duke of Wellington, 1995) "Thank you pip"

Wendy:(checking ornate, baroque, gold mantelpiece clock. Gift from Sultan of Brunei, 2006) "Sweetcheeks, don't you have a ghastly football match at 9.15 tonight?"

Ian (after a long drag on his pipe) "No, buttercup. The contest tonight betwixt the colourful amateurs of Real Ale Madrid and the brutal professional thugs of The Cleveland Steamers does not take place until 10.45. But, thanks for asking mon cherrie."

Wendy: (adjusts bustle and puts a sprig of jasmine in her hair) "Are you sure, my God of Thunder? I could have sworn on Saturday that local heartthrob, Grimesy, said it was at 9.15 tonight. Another servant on the fire dear?"

Ian: "Indeed, my clementine, throw the scullery maid on there. Grimsey may be a handsome devil, but his organizational skills are somewhat lacking compared to his overall charm and zeal. However, I will double check. (knocks pipe against the side of his valet, McNulty) I say, McNut, do you have that blackberry thingy that I bought last week? Do a chap a favour and check my entry under 'football, April 2nd, 2009'. It is right after 'Charity ball, Brampton Rose Theatre' and right before 'Drive Mayor to Primrose Motel' "

McNulty: (checks Blackberry thingy. Sees time on it says 10.45. Looks smugly at Wendy, thinks to himself. Master is never wrong. I wonder though, if he should wear spats with a Liverpool track suit? "10.45 Sir"

Ian: "See, my petal? Now be a good lass and fetch my finest tobacco?"

Wendy: (Eyes shining bright with love and admiration) "Anything for you my lovebubble."

Wednesday March 18th 2009

Jesus its the New Year. So apologies for the lack of updates ... blah blah blah been busy, new woman, new knitting pattern, new underpants to break in ... all the usual excuses. Its been several months since Christmas and my trip to see the family in the old country and now its time to get all my loyal fans up to date on the to ings and fro ings (eh?) of your beloved Real Ale Family. Well where to start. Its now a whole new era. Obama is in. Flares are out. Bush is always in (ehem ... cough) and winter is on its way out.

Over 30's finished the Autumn session in early January at the semi stage (ooh err missus) and quite frankly did better than I would have given them credit for. More importantly, the Gaffer cooked the books and with the help of 'book keepers extraordinaire Lynn and Jane' managed to convince Soccer City that our debt is now only about 300 bucks. A Christmas miracle some say. A result of lent say others. Bollocks I say ... he finally got his fingers and toes to add correctly at last. Granted he should have 18 fingers and toes if his maths is correct and therefore be competing in the 200M butterfly but I babble .. the debt is lowering and maybe we will be fiscally whole before the outdoor starts.

As far as the winter session stands, 4 games in ... an arse end upwards schedule (whats new) and the Over 30's are poised to strike with several games (and meat pies) in hand. New faces in the form of whatshisface .. Matt? Mick? Archie? Darrens mate ... the one who cant stand up and has an Micky Dolenz haircut (what do I know maybe its coming back in .. he is only 18 and three quarters for f*&cks sake) and we're doing alright .. next game is a week tomorrow at 9.15pm.

Other news to note ... Mr Capone and his fiance have a Jack & Jill on March 4th in Brampton. Get your tickets and show up for a good night of drinking and .... well ... fun.

Onto CoEd ... a tear jerking end to the Co Ed autumn session .. filled with tragedy, personal sacrifice, joy and tragedy ... and this is just Parksey and his search for a lost favourite pipe wrench. Suffice to say that the team went all the way to the finals and lost in most unfortunate circumstances to Benfica. Oh well, onto the new session and a great start. Only one loss so far this session and that was last week to well guess who ... yes Benfica. Anyhow ... time to put these nasty aggressive thoughts of revenge and turn them to our next game this week ... at 5pm yes 5PM against Isotopes ... a difficult game as we will be missing Warren, Max & Jamie who are off holidaying at the warm water outlet of Pickering nuclear facility. Yes folks its March break again. Be there or the man will shove a bat up yer nightdress as usual.

No tables this week as well .. I really cant be arsed ... baby steps I think getting the site back up to date. Maybe next week. If your that interested, check out the Soccer City website.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our loyal fans.

Team and game news for the last couple of weeks and for the Over 30's, things not going well as 2008 draws to a close. Two weeks ago, a 5 - 5 draw against Oakville Athletic was a scrappy affair with some dissension in the ranks. Shifts for too long, loss of shape and bitching meant that we were always on the back foot. Draw was a reasonable result but we need to do better, especially in keeping the shifts to a reasonable length and the moaning to a minimum. Last Thursday we took on the table leaders, Team Ice Oldies. A strong team, we would need a good performance and unfortunately, it did not show up. A 6 - 0 loss due to poor defending and marking, loss of shape again and not hitting the target meant we were never really in this one. The result was a little flattering to them to be fair, 3 of the goals being bounces or deflections that landed in their favour. Message from this one though is the shift lengths and playing a position. Anyway a few weeks break over the holidays should give us chance to regroup and hopefully have a strong push to the end of the session. One other thing to point out is dosh. We need to clear the outstanding amount at Soccer City so be prepared for some fund raising activities in the New Year. Nuff said. See you January 8th.

Co Ed News is somewhat better - no game last week so onto yesterdays encounter with Brampton FC. This one should have been a reasonable run out for us and ultimately turned out to be the case although some concern at kick off as pretty much everyone was late. Starting with 3 guys 2 girls, people filtered in throughout the game and we eventually ran out 6 - 0 winners. A nice team, very sporting and recognition to these guys for showing up and giving a game each week. Their keeper made some fine saves in this one too so the score could have been much more. No break next week so we are right back at it next week straight after Christmas. I will be looking for the results as I will be in UK for a couple of weeks. Make sure you do the business. See you in a couple of weeks and all the best for Christmas and New Year.

Sunday December 7th 2008

Two fair results this week but again both teams having the same problem. Lack of participation and communication of unavailability. Over 30's had a typically tough game against our old mates Riverplate - a good game apart from one wanker on their team who thought he was the worlds toughest man ... especially by lifting people when they weren't looking. As you would expect he got as good as he gave if not more. Aside from him, a good bunch of lads who we enjoy playing and who always give us a good game. This one was no exception and with a lack of players ensuring everyone had a good run out, we played some very decent football. We controlled most of the game but as usual could not hit the net. A late injury to Paul Capone and we ended up with no sub for the last 5 minutes. Grimesy playing well in nets, Newman putting himself about for the entire game, Rennie and Capone solid at the back and Richie and Jack getting the goals, we ran out to a 2 - 2 tie. Next week we need players to either show up or let us know if you cant make it. Email and cell phones are not that difficult to use. Game is at 7.45pm and I am trying to arrange for Parksey to play as it is a tough one against the strong Oakville Athletic.

Co Ed was a similar story with regards to players only this time having only one girl rather than a lack of overall numbers. No excuses for the snow (this is Canada in winter dammit), we needed more and this is especially ironic as there were murmurings last week of too many girls and not enough playing time. Anyhow, well done to MJ for showing and playing the entire game especially as one girl meant we had to play a player short. Another solid performance, a couple of unlucky shots on goal and constantly tracking back, she had another great game. With Jamie, Michael, Darren all playing well and stringing together some very nice football, we shut down the young and tricky Mississauga Dinamos and eventually ran out comfortable winners at 6 - 1 which really did not reflect on the good game they gave us. No game for co ed next week but the following week we play at 5pm so get there or if not let the man on the phone know.

Bit of a mixed bag this week and a somewhat strange update for the Over 30's who took on HBSFC on Friday night after a 2 week layoff. Firstly the sheer number of players especially on a Friday night caused some amusement with a 7 man sorry person (yes 7) rotation up front and 5 at the back. Mario decided to watch from the bar due to the number of players. With Warren playing (even on a dodgy shoulder), Chris F sober and fit, Paul Capone available and even the marauding Dave Newman making a rare guest appearance, we had a very strong squad. We beat this team as well only two weeks ago with a weaker squad but that was not to be for this game. They had picked up a couple of players, striker and keeper especially that really won the game for them. We started well, played some nice passing football but could not beat the keeper. He stood on his head. This coupled with the striker scoring about 4 of their 7, they ran out 7 - 2 winners. Good performance from Lynn especially with great vision and passing.

Next week back to the Thursday night slot and a 10pm kick off against the old adversary Riverplate (imagine this in a Sean Connery voice taken right out of Hunt for Red October).

Now for the next odd update. Well odd in as much as I dont have one. I did not play in the Co Ed battle of the top of the table against Benfica and the website is not updated. So not sure what happened although this game usually brings out a bit of feistiness in both teams.

Updates will be provided as soon as I find out what happened.

**UPDATE** Co Ed lost 3 - 2 to Benfica in a typically chippy game that ended with a a couple of sending offs. Unlucky that we lost but one we must put behind us and move onto the next game.

This just in ... Co Ed and former Nor'n Ireland player Mike Nelson talks to RAMFCTV in exclusive interview:

I owe all my football success to mentors like Real Ale veteran's Warren Parkes, Simon Burgess and my lovely partner Holly Parkes. After an addiction to sniffing Mr Sheen, I thought I had lost it all. But after spending several long weeks of closed door training and drills with experts like Warren and 'The Boss' (Simon), I managed to kick the habit and actually hit the net a few times. I know I have a long way to go but with friends like these, I know I have everything I need to be successful and achieve all I can with Real Ale.

Sunday November 16th 2008

Brief update. Y fronts should not be too tight, G strings should not be worn by male members of the Over 30's team and boxers should not show the 'boy's out of the barracks' when relaxing with a beer post game.

Now onto game news. The Over 30's goalkeeping crisis has led to the 2nd loss of the season. With new 'old' boy Mario returning to the squad, his debut this season was not one to write home about. Some very poor distribution led to at least 3 goals in a game that without these giveaways, we should have won. No reflection on Mario, he is not a regular keeper and he put on the gloves to help out but the result and performance were poor to say the least. Anyhow onwards and upwards - a 4 - 6 loss and with a weeks break in the schedule, we need to come back stronger for the next game. This one is on Friday November 28th and against HBSFC, the team we beat the game before last.

Onto Co Ed this Saturday gone and a chippy game to say the least with the BOS. A strong squad even without Jamie dominated the game but with one or two unsavoury challenges especially from their young keeper, it was a physical game for all. The young keeper does deserve special mention for his 'Tourette's' like outbursts, even against his own team. Wanker. On a positive note it was nice to see ex-Real Ale Co Ed player Jackie McGregor back playing for them after a bad knee injury. A 4-1 win anyhow and again a 2 week break before we play Benfica at 5.00pm on November 29th. Need everyone there folks so make sure you show up or the man above will show up and shove a bat up your nightdress. Top of the league though baby! Nice one!

Monday November 10th 2008

Some very sad new to pass along as we learned that Roy Boyce Snr passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. As many of you know, Roy had been a long time supporter of the team and we had the pleasure of seeing him for a few games over the summer even though he was ill. Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to Roy Jnr and the family at this very sad time.

Funeral arrangements are set for Thursday November 13th at 1pm with visitation on Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. Funeral home is located on Dixie Road, south of Queen and is next to the old Nortel plant.

Sunday November 9th 2008

Another two good victories see both teams continue to sit well in the Over 30' and Co Ed at Soccer City. Last Monday, a very late game for the Co Ed team (11.30pm for chuffin hecks sake) so well done to those that showed (and stuck around for a drink after). A strong team, especially with 5 ladies and 4 blokes meant that the ladies did most of the leg work. Some good goals and more great keeping from the fella with the hair meant a good win against the Gunners.

Over 30's continued their streak as well although the goalkeeping dilema is starting to take its toll. Mr G strapped on the strap on, then the next night showed up to footy and strapped on the gloves for what was a truly mediocre performance between the sticks (actually he was not that bad but we dont want him getting carried away - well we do but not until we got a keeper). He is not available this week as he is doing some top level shaggi...I mean going out for a nice evening with his lovely better half so we need players. We are trying to convince Mr Parkes (see above) to show up but nothing confirmed yet.

See you Thursday.

Evening folks, quick update for the last week. Over 30's took on the Trojans on Thursday and ran out comfortable winners with a 6 - 2 victory.  Mr G did a good job in nets whilst Ian took up the gloves later in the second half to give Mr G a run out. 1st touch was obviously his trademark chip. Next game is Thursday at 7.45pm against Palatine so be there promptly so the game plan can be played out on the white board. Or maybe not.

Saturday, Parksey's Co Ed team played Brampton FC in a game which, quite frankly, started badly. With 4 minutes to kick off and 6 players only, it looked like a long night especially for MJ and Denise as the only girls. And it was but after a slow start, we took a hold on the game and never looked back. Highlights of the game were Denise's goal celebrations and also her lightning fast save even though she was not in nets. Warren could not keep out the ensuing penalty but the goal had no impact on the outcome of the game.  Next is Monday night at 11.30pm YES 11.30pm. Lets get everyone there on time or let Warren or MJ know if you cant make it. No game next Saturday.

Saturday October 25th 2008

With new management at the helm of the Co Ed (that's bloke's and girls to you lot), the team ran out Saturday with some new signings which looked to have paid off well for Parksey, the new coach. A deserved and resounding 7 - 1 victory against Pro Elite but with an unfortunate injury to Holly which may have put her out for the season, takes the edge of a good start to the season. Get fit soon H.

Your new coach (and this is on a good day)

Full Match report to follow. A victory though for the new look over 30's squad. Same core of players with a few new faces to bolster the ranks, player bios next on the list to be updated. What was the score you ask. Well if you'd 'shut yer cake ole' for a sec, I'll tell you. A 3 - 1 victory against the strong Cleveland Steamers. Leading from the front (and some say he has more front than a row of houses), Mr G with 2 and Richie with a cool finish for the 3rd. Back to Thursday only next week.

A solid start to the season, thanks to that pork and lentil stew I ate in the works cafe for lunch yesterday. Even though we lost, we played the better football. Yeah, yeah moral victory and all that. Without a goalkeeper, it was always going to be tough, but the chap who did play goal "The Moggy" did his best. Somebody scored for us, but being at the other end of the field trying to pull my goalie shorts out of the crack of my arse, I couldn't tell who. Was it Paul C? Darren?  They won it in the last two minutes on a rebound, but we should have taken more of our chances really. They only had two shots of note. So we start against the toughest team probably, with a decent performance, but no points. Sort of like this match report. Stylish, trendy but pointless.

Tonight it is the Cleveland Sweaty Steamers. 7.45.

Good to see some money come in last night chaps, keep it coming this evening. Also good to see was the highly efficent bar staff keep up with our every need and whim. Even managing to find some pipe cleaners for Lynn and slippers for Simon. Must be the new management there. Not that the old management was bad or anything, perish the thought...I am digging a hole here for myself aren't I?

See you this evening.

Cheers

The Reserve team also gave a good account of themselves, especially by inflicting a defeat on Astra, their only loss of the season but with them gaining revenge in the semi finals of the play offs.
